Assigned 52-Week Family Violence Classes (BIP)? What the Order Means and Your Options in California
If a California court assigned you to a 52-week “family violence” or “domestic violence” program, understand exactly what was ordered before you enroll in anything — the wrong program can cost you time and money and may not satisfy your court.

What is a 52-week BIP (Batterer’s Intervention Program)?
Under California Penal Code § 1203.097, a person granted probation for a domestic violence offense is generally required to complete a minimum 52-week Batterer’s Intervention Program approved by the county probation department handling the case. A BIP is a specific, state-recognized domestic-violence intervention curriculum — different from an anger management class in both content and certification.
“Family violence classes,” “domestic violence classes,” “DV classes,” “the 52-week program,” and “BIP” usually all refer to this same requirement.
Other 52-week orders that may require a BIP
A 52-week requirement can appear in more than one kind of case. Common examples:
- Criminal DV probation (PC 1203.097): the most common source — probation after a domestic-violence conviction.
- Criminal protective orders: a judge may attach a 52-week program as a condition of a protective order.
- Family court and custody matters: in some divorce, custody, or restraining-order cases, a judge may order a party to complete a batterer’s or domestic-violence program.
- Juvenile dependency / family reunification: child-welfare cases sometimes require a parent to complete a 52-week domestic-violence program as part of a reunification plan.
Not every 52-week order is a BIP. Some people are ordered into a 52-week anger management program instead, which is a different requirement. The only way to know which applies to you is to read your order and confirm with the court or your probation officer.
Is Zinco a BIP provider?
No. To be direct: Zinco is not a certified Batterer’s Intervention Program. We are an anger management education provider. If your order specifically requires a certified BIP, you should enroll with a county-approved BIP provider unless your court or probation officer has told you otherwise.
Can I use Zinco’s program to satisfy a 52-week family violence order?
Sometimes — but only as an exception, and only with approval. In some cases, courts or probation officers have allowed a client to fulfill a requirement using an alternative program such as ours. This is decided case by case and is never guaranteed. Do not assume our program will be accepted for a BIP or family-violence order.
